Day 1 - Set out from Cashapampa

7 Jul 2007

Today we travelled by taxi from Huaraz to the tiny rural village of Cashapampa (2950m), the starting point of the trek. Cashapampa lies at the outlet of the Santa Cruz valley. We would come down this valley in 2 weeks time, at the very end of the trek. But for now, we had to sidle around the base of the Cordillera Blanca to the small village of Hualcayan (3139m) from which our long climb into the Cordillera Blanca would begin. We arrived in Cashapampa around midday, leaving about half a day for the walk with our heavy packs to Hualcayan.

		Today's walk took us through rural country around the base of the Cordillera Blanca.
		We followed numerous pathways among the paddocks, not always sure whether we were on the correct path or not!
