Day 5 - Alpamayo North Base Camp and Climb to 5200m

11 Jul 2007

Today we continued up the Alpamayo valley, past Lake Jancarurish, then up steeply into a high valley surrounded by majestic peaks. This valley is the location of the Alpamayo North base camp, and we made this our camp site for the night. We had the whole valley to ourselves all day, and we explored it extensively, climbing to its uppermost reaches above lakes beneath Santa Cruz. This valley is close to some major peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, such as Alpamayo, Quitaraju and Santa Cruz.

In the morning we continued into the upper part of the valley. The previous night's camp was in the valley floor near the middle of this photo.

We climbed past the turquoise Lake Jancarurish.

Then we climbed steeply up into a high valley that was the location of the Alpamayo North Base Camp.

Kendy arrives at the base camp. We camped here and then explored up into the head of the valley which lies ahead of us in this photo.

We climbed as high as we could up into the head of the valley, reaching an altitude of 5200m.

Here, Kendy is at an altitude of about 5000m. The peak in the background is Alpamayo.

In the afternoon we returned to the base camp. Alpamayo is in the background.
