Day 7 - Huayhuash to Pumarini Base Camp via Hot Springs

27 Jun 2007

Today we climbed over the Portachuelo de Huayhuash, a pass at 4785m. This brought us into a valley where there are natural hot springs. The water in these springs runs clear and warm, and we stopped to enjoy a swim and wash in the naturally heated water. Then we continued up to our campsite at altitude 4600m, from which we would attempt the summit of Pumarini on the following day.

The previous night was one of the coldest of the entire trek. In the morning Lorin and I stand outside our frosted tents, waiting for the sunlight to creep down the mountainside and reach us.

At last the sun reaches us, bringing warm colours as well as warmer temperatures.

Our campsite here is at an altitude of about 4600m. From here we would attempt the summit of Pumarini, departing early the following morning.
