Day 11 - Cutatambo to Huatiaq

1 Jul 2007

Today brought a change in scenery to our trekking. For the first time since the beginning of the trek we dropped to an altitude below 4000m. This brought about a change in vegetation and scenery. Instead of alpine grasslands, we found ourselves walking through eucalyptus forest. The area was heavily cultivated and more densely populated than the higher altitude terrain that we had become accustomed to. Towards the end of the day though, we climbed back above 4000m into familar terrain of open grassy pasture, meandering streams, peaks and glaciers.

Donkeys cross a bridge over a stream in the valley above Huayllapa.

The valleys appear dry in this photo but are more intensively cultivated than the higher altitude uplands that we had become accustomed to.

After climbing out of Huayllapa we gain views of the glaciated Diablo Mudo. We will climb this peak in 2 days time. Below Diablo Mudo you can see our tents, already pitched by our donkey drivers who had arrived ahead of us.

The altitude here is 4253m.
