Day 2 - Llamac to Quartelhuain

22 Jun 2007

Today was the first full day of trekking on this trip. With our gear carried by donkeys, we headed up the valley from Llamac, climbing steadily along a road until, at an altitude of about 4000m, the rural valley atmosphere gave way to alpine grasslands surrounded by rocky peaks. We reached our campsite at about 1:30pm, which allowed time for Kendy and I to do an afternoon walk.

We followed this valley upstream for most of the day. On the left is the village of Popca, which we reached about 1 hour after leaving Llamac.

After some steady climbing, we reached an altitude of about 4000m, at which time the valley opened out into alpine grasslands surrounded by rocky peaks.

The alpine grasslands are populated by livestock and scattered farming communities.

In the afternoon Kendy and I climbed above our tents for extensive views of the surrounding peaks. Our tents can be seen near the bottom of this photo.

The altitude of the campsite in this photo is 4170m.

Because this was our first night at this altitude on this trek, some of us were experiencing mild altitude headaches at this time.

Back at our camp site the skies clear after an afternoon storm.
