Day 3 - Quartelhuain to Laguna Mitococha via Cacanan Punta

23 Jun 2007

Today we crossed our first pass, and this took us to an altitude of 4690m. The pass of Cacanan Punta is significant because it represented the continental divide of South America. The pass lies on the rim of the Amazon basin. To the west of the pass all rivers flow to the Pacific, to the east all rivers flow into the Amazon and the atlantic. There was dramatic scenery in weather of varying moods.

As we climbed towards the pass we gained great views back down the valley we had walked up on the previous day.

Views of rocky peaks with lupins in the foreground.

Our donkeys overtake us as we climb the pass.

From the pass itself there is dramatic scenery.

Cacanan Punta. This is the continental divide of South America and the backbone of the Andes. To the left of the photo water drains to the Pacific, to the right it drains to the Amazon.

From the pass we trek around to Laguna Mitococha where we camp. Altitude of tonight's camp site is 4230m.
