These photos are of an ascent of the ridge to the west of our base camp in an attempt to reach a third summit, Monte Italia.

Photos 25-26 Jan - Attempt on Monte Italia

25 Jan 2013 12:53pm

To reach Monte Italia we crossed the stream at our base camp and then made our way up through this forest onto the ridge you can see in this photo.

25 Jan 2013 1:24pm

Once on the ridge we could look back down to Caleta Olla where our boat and one other were moored.

25 Jan 2013 3:06pm

We headed up the ridge and it wasn't long before we were above the treeline and into the zone of bare rock. The ice field is not much further up from here.

25 Jan 2013 3:35pm

Fantastic views of Monte Frances from this ridge. We climbed Monte Frances via the ridge on the right.

Taking a break with great views of the Frances glacier.

25 Jan 2013 4:16pm.

Looking up the ridge we can see the route we will take up to the col ahead. In the end we reached the col but in cloud.

26 Jan 2013 10:26am

We camped here on the night of 25 Jan and on the 26th we waited for a clear break in the weather before making our attempt on Monte Italia. We set off late morning, but turned back due to poor visibility.

26 Jan 2013 4:02pm

A few hours after returning to the tent due to poor visibility the weather cleared again, so we made another attempt at Monte Italia.

26 Jan 2013 4:48pm

We reached this col with the open expanse of the ice plateau beyond, however the cloud came in again and visibility was zero so unfortunately we had to turn back.

So we headed back down the ridge.

26 Jan 2013 6:40pm.

Once at a lower altitude the visibility was good again and the wind calm, but still the ice plateau higher up was in cloud.

From here we could see the route we had taken to Monte Frances and Monte Bove earlier in the trip.

26 Jan 2013 6:41pm

Heading down the ridge back to the harbour.

26 Jan 2013 10:02pm

At last we reach the harbour.

There at the harbour were people from an Antarctic expedition and they had a barbeque going. The wine and fresh food was very welcome after our spell in the mountains.
The harbour was teaming with fresh sardines. Marcel went out with his dinghy and a net and caught a whole bucketful of fresh sardines to supplement the steaks on the barbeque!
