Day 5 - Return to Base Camp

27 Jul 2007

Today we retraced our steps of two days ago to Camp 1 and thence all the way down to base camp. The descent to Camp 1 was particularly spectacular, with some more abseiling or steep downclimbing on the rope. Again, much of the descending was done while the slopes were still in shadow. It was another incredible and challenging day. At base camp there was some rain during the afternoon but we were back in the zone of ample food supplies, and we feasted in the base camp tent that night, the happy beneficiaries of Cesar's excellent cooking.

Beginning the descent from Camp 2. Camp 2 is not visible in this photo, but it is just up and to the right, out of sight between the two main peaks of Huascarán.

Abseiling once more.

Finally we are on the gentle slopes near Camp 1 once more.

Then we are back on the rock slabs above base camp.
