Today was the start of our Peru holiday, we had flown into Huaraz from sea level on the previous day. Huaraz is a town at 3100m (10171 ft) above sea level. Tomorrow we would start a 15 day Huayhuash Trek which is almost entirely above 4000m. So a day hike to acclimatize to the altitude was essential. Wwe joined the same group of companions that would be doing the Huayhuash trek with us and spent a day hiking up to the beautiful Lake Churup, near Huaraz.

The day trip was organised by Peruvian Andes Adventures, the same company that organised our Huayhuash Trek and my Huascarán climb. Our guide was Henri, who led the way, shared his knowledge of the Peruvian Andes, and provided us with an excellent lunch when we reached the lake. The hike started at Pitec, a lovely alpine meadow at altitude 3850m and a short bus ride from Huaraz.

Here are the photos from this great day out.

The climb to Lake Churup took us through scattered quenua trees.

There were some short sections where clambering up rocks was required.

We reached the beautiful Lake Churup and had lunch here.

After lunch, Kendy and I climbed up to a tiny lake at 4580m.

On the way back around Lake Churup before joining with the others.
