The MountainSphere navigation weekend is a 2 day educational bushwalk that provides clients with practical training on the skills of navigation off the beaten track by map and compass. Expert tuition in map reading and use of a compass is provided, and participants immediately put these skills in practise to find a route and navigate to a beautiful campsite hidden in the heart of a sandstone wilderness. Apart from the educational aspects, the navigation weekend is an excellent opportunity to get off the beaten track and explore a beautiful wilderness area in a small group expedition with people who are there for the same reasons you are.

Here are some photos from the navigation weekend held on 30 Nov - 1 Dec 2019. A large bushfire was burning well to the north of the area we were hiking in and the area was very dry. The park was open with a park fire ban in place. Like much of eastern NSW, there was smoke haze. Due to the unusually high risk of fires we adapted the route so as to keep south of the Wollangambe River, thereby keeping ourselves close to safe and fast exit routes. Smoke and fires notwithstanding we had a great weekend out, with a full dose of navigation training being administered. Everyone got ample opportunity to practise the nav on marked and unmarked tracks and trails, and some scrub bashing thrown in. Our campsite was in a quiet sheltered glade with natural rock gardens nearby and a small stream with a few clear pools of clean water. On Sunday we did a short hike to a high viewpoint for some more navigation practise, but due to heavy smoke haze, we headed back to Bell by lunch time. The trip concluded at Bell for some, and at the Pie in the Sky cafe in Bilpin for others!

Studying the map en route to our Saturday lunch spot.

Setting bearings along a ridge.

We camp in a small site in a sheltered location.

Group photo on the Sunday after navigating to a prominent high point.
