Today I went to a supermarket in Almaty and bought 2 weeks' food for the mountain. I was then met by Kazbek, the director of the mountaineering outfit in Almaty. He drove me and two British guys to Karkara base camp, at the edge of the Tian Shan mountains.

After about 6 hours of driving from Almaty, we arrived here, at Karkara Base Camp. This camp lies at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains, on the border of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. This photo was taken on the evening of 31 July 2011. On the following morning a helicopter would take us into the mountains.
