Day 1 - 24 Jan 2009 - Danae Canyon and Thurat Spires

"Danae and the Spires" is probably the best day trip in the Blue Mountains. Essentially this trip involves one of the most spectacular canyons, Danae Brook, followed by one of the most spectacular ridges, Thurat Spires.

It was a very long day of canyoning. Rising at 5am, starting walking at 6am and at the top of the first abseil by 7:30am we then quickly abseiled Danae Canyon and then reached Kanangra Creek by lunch time. This gave us the afternoon for the climb over Thurat Spires and the long scrub bash back to Mt Thurat. A great day!

Party: Jo Boyd, Tom Gleeson, Peter Raines, Ashley Burke

Tom descends the second abseil.

Looking down the canyon from the top of the third abseil, "The Chockstone Abseil".

After the main canyon is this incredible gorge - "The Pooken Hole". The floor of this gorge is strewn with huge boulders which we clamber down.

After lunch we climb over Thurat Spires. Here is the view back to the first spire from the approach to the second spire.
