"The Cascades", a rainforest walk about 5km outside Mindo

Much of my time in Ecuador in 2015 was spent high in the mountains around Quito, in the wind and clouds, battling sleet and foul weather at higher altitudes on my "Seven Summits of Ecuador" expedition.

It was therefore a welcome interlude to spend 2 days at Mindo, a rainforest village on the Pacific side of the Andes mountain range, about 2 hours by bus from Quito. The spectacular road from Quito winds its way down into a deep valley plunging from the alpine grasslands around Quito into the dense dark green and humid jungle below. Mindo is a centre of many outdoor activities and among these are:
