"The Cascades", a rainforest walk about 5km outside Mindo
Much of my time in Ecuador in 2015 was spent high in the mountains around Quito, in the wind and clouds, battling sleet and foul weather at higher altitudes on my "Seven Summits of Ecuador" expedition.
It was therefore a welcome interlude to spend 2 days at Mindo, a rainforest village on the Pacific side of the Andes mountain range, about 2 hours by bus from Quito. The spectacular road from Quito winds its way down into a deep valley plunging from the alpine grasslands around Quito into the dense dark green and humid jungle below. Mindo is a centre of many outdoor activities and among these are:
My lodgings just outside Mindo amid a lush rainforest garden.
Here there were hummingbirds around the kitchen and dining area.
Zip lining above the rainforest canopy.
A tiny frog spotted on a night walk.
A strange looking caterpillar.
An odd looking stick insect.
An even more odd looking spider.
A banded snake.
A sleeping parrot.
A very large cockroach.
