Every year I run a 2 day navigation weekend in the Blue Mountains. On this weekend we put into practise all the skills that I have tried to present on my online navigation tutorial. We hike into an area where there are few trails or roads, but panoramic views of the surrounding area. We learn to use the compass and work our way through the bush - not following any track for much of the way - and by these means navigate to a place of amazing sandstone formations where we enjoy a great night camping and socializing around the campfire.

Here are some photos from the May 2013 navigation weekend. Many thanks to Prab Naththarampatha for sharing the photos.

Much of the walking is in an area where there are no trails, so we use our maps, compasses and skills learned on the weekend to find our way.

Studying the map.

This guy is using a rather wierd style of compass, probably more suited for sailing. For navigation while bushwalking, a compass that looks like this one is better:

Putting heads together to work it all out as a group.
We navigate out way to this amazing sandstone overhang and setup our camp here.

After a hard day's walking we settle around the campfire for a cup of tea.
Then we get our dinner on.
Then we relax by the fireside.
