The "Main Range" is the highest mountain range on the Australian continent.Within it lies Australia's 3 highest peaks, Mt Kosciuszko, Mt Townsend and Mt Twynam. All three of these peaks can be climbed in a single day of fast cross country skiing if the weather is fine.

On the weekend of 15-16 Sep 2012 we did exactly that, and here are the photos. As well as climbing "the alpine Three Peaks" you can also venture out to Watsons Crags and visit Blue Lake, the largest glacial lake on the Main Range.

A perfect September Saturday. From Guthega we skied to Illawong Lodge then crossed the footbridge over the Snowy River and began climbing towards Mt Twynam.

As we approach Twynam there are a few patches of snowgums. Twynam is the dome shaped peak at the top left.

We setup our tent below Mt Twynam then skied off to find water. After returning with ull bottles we had lunch before setting off for Watsons Crags.
The main range in all its glory as seen looking south from Mt Twynam. Mt Kosciuszko is the broad peak centre left.
Skiing across towards Watsons Crags from Mt Twynam.

Back to the tent on Saturday evening for a well earned dinner, port and sleep.
On Sunday we climbed Twynam again. Skins off now for the ski south.

Near Mueller Pass, skiing south along the range towards Mt Kosciuszko.

Fantastic downhill run off Mt Townsend to Lake Albina!

Late afternoon on Sunday, back over Twynam after a long day of skiing.
