Photo showing fixed ropes leading to a tower at about 5900m and the impassable serac above it

We only spent one day above Camp 1, after we were forced to concede that the serac at 6000m was too dangerous to approach safely from any direction. The decision was made to abandon all hope of a successful summit bid. We did however have fixed ropes in place above Camp 1, which led to a ridge where older fixed ropes could be found leading higher. Greg and I spent a day climbing as high as we could on the fixed ropes until, at an altitude of about 5800m, we decided to turn back.

These photos are all of the day spend climbing above Camp 1 on 4 Oct 2012.

This photo shows the route immediately above Camp 1.

Simon is setting up fixed ropes up this steep loose and rocky side of the ridge so that we can gain the crest of the ridge.

The idea is to then follow the ridge to the upper mountain.

Once on the ridge, several strands of older rope show the way higher up the mountain.
From the crest of the ridge, stunning views across to Meru Peak are had.
From the crest of teh ridge we can look back down to Camp 1.
This photo clearly shows the route up the ridge, following a line of fixed ropes.

It was possible to abseil some sections of the fixed rope.

Going down the fixed rope was actually harder than going up.
