On the weekend of 12-13 Feb 2011 a group of 7 braved a weekend of wet weather and battalions of leeches to complete Kalang Falls and Dione Dell, two beautiful creeks with abseils and waterfalls.

Saturday 12 Feb - Kalang Falls

Kalang Falls is a spectacular series of waterfalls that tumbles into Kanangra gorge. This creek lies in the heart of what is possibly among the steepest and most scenically spectacular mountain areas of Australia. On this weekend it was misty and rainy, so I have only a few photos. For photos of this gorge in better weather, click here.

On this day were Kosta, Monica, Nichol, Thi, and myself.

Cascades above the first abseil.

Before the first abseil.

Thi on the first abseil of Kalang Falls.

From this point on it began raining steadily, the rocks became extremely slippery, and the camera was put away for good! After about 8 abseils, some huge, and in worsening weather, I declared the trip officially cancelled! We climbed up a muddy loose gully above the second last abseil. Now safely out of the canyon we had only to run the gauntlet of parades of leeches as we climbed steadily upwards to Mt Kanangra and the waiting cars. For photos of what the rest of the canyon looks like in better weather click here.

Sunday 13 Feb - Dione Dell

Today the weather was better, but still damp, cloudy and drizzly. Dione Dell is a beautiful creek and much easier than Kalang Falls with only 4 or 5 easy but spectacular abseils. There were fewer leeches here too. We completed the canyon and then had a late lunch in worsening weather before heading back to our cars and somewhere dry!

On this day were Annie, Kosta, Mila, Monica, Nichol, Thi, and myself.
