Day 1 - Matukituki Valley

22 Feb 2007

We set off from the car park in the valley floor at about lunch time and in fine weather, began the walk up the valley. Our packs were weighed down by all our climbing gear plus 7 days food, so it was a slow trudge, but amid beautiful valley scenery.

Setting off from the car park in Matukituki Valley with our heavy packs.

Looking ahead, up the Matukituki Valley, towards Aspiring Hut.

We made camp that evening at Pearl Flat. This was an idyllic camp site for the first 30 seconds or so, and we set down our heavy packs with great relief, but soon we were overwhelmed by a swarm of sand flies and had to either retreat into our tents or armour plate ourselves with gortex from head to foot.
