Stage 4 - Podlog to Tržič, plus side trip to Srednja Vas and cycle to Bled

2 - 4 Jul 2010

After surviving the adrenalin packed excitement of Stage 3 and its high mountains, snow and via ferrate, Stage 4 was relatively subdued and a pleasant respite among very different and more tranquil scenery. Having arrived in the village of Jezersko from Češka koča around mid-morning, we stopped to buy food and then by a stroke of good fortune were kindly given a lift a few kilometres down the road to Podlog where Stage 4 starts. This saved us about 5km of road walking and we still had several hours of this warm sunny day ahead of us to make a start on Stage 4. This we did, climbing the peak of Storžič (2132m) in the late afternoon. Then after a very long and tiring descent we arrived at the Dom pod Storžičem, a large hut nestling deep in forest at the foot of Storžič. We arrived at this hut in the middle of a thunderstorm to find a party in full swing - a local alpine club had chosen this hut for an annual get together and night of singing and dancing. So with this free entertainment and clearing weather in the subdued light of the deep forest a very enjoyable night was had.

From this hut it was about a half day walk to Tržič which is a sizeable town but somewhat lacking in accommodation suitable for hungry, sweaty and tired trekkers. A visit to the local tourist office found us an apartment in a tiny hamlet a few kilometres out of town and the owner of this comfortable and quiet abode drove into Tržič to pick us up. We enjoyed two nights in this delightful little hamlet on a quiet road between Tržič and Bled. On the intervening day we borrowed bikes and spent a day cycling through the countryside. We visited the tourist town of Bled and its associated lake which was very nice, but our overall impression of Bled is that it was overdeveloped and spoilt by tourism.

Here are photos of Stage 4, completed in two half days, plus photos of our sojourn to Srednja Vas and Bled.

Outside Dom pod Storžičem, after an evening thunderstorm had cleared, the sun filtered through the trees in this deep forest.

The following afternoon there was another thunderstorm but by then we were in our apartment at Srednja Vas. This is the view from the apartment over the valley after the thunderstorm cleared.

The next day we borrowed bikes and rode to Bled. Again there was an afternoon thunderstorm. This photo is of the church on the island in Lake Bled taken as the storm approached.
